Sending out post cards, fliers and other mailings is an effective way to target a marketing audience and address lists for mailings can be created from free databases.

The development of marketing mailing lists is usually left to a list broker and his staff of professional researchers, but where do list brokers get their targeted address information?

Many times they purchase their information from companies who sell their customer lists or names and addresses of potential prospects. Other times their information comes from market research companies who are in business solely to collect personal data through the use of surveys and informational forms so that they can sell this information for mailing list marketing. These address lists can be used for direct mail campaigns through the postal service or for setting up an email marketing campaign.

Finding Mailing List Information for Free

There are many sources that are accessible through the internet to obtain names, addresses and basic information. One very reliable source is a database search performed within a municipal, city or county website. More and more counties and cities are listing their tax collection records online and most of them have some kind of search capacity. Filtering out the contacts to include or exclude can be as easy as checking a few check boxes or entering in specific search terms.

How to Form a Targeted Business Mailing List

As in the case of Pasco County, Florida, the Tax Collector's Office has free records searches that list businesses by type of business as do many other county sites. Searching these sites will provide a mailing list that includes the owner's name and address that is listed on the record when the business or occupational taxes were last paid. With this search, a list broker could form a targeted business mailing list that included all of the auto repair shops – or any other type of business – within this county. This kind of information can be useful to a variety of direct mail campaigns and the use of these searches is free.

Websites such as these will also provide information for residential properties in the county and can be searched and filtered to include only residences on certain streets, newly sold properties or by those who are being in their taxes. Lists such as these are used by companies to welcome in new homeowners or by tax attorneys and loan companies to target potential clients. Many residential service businesses use the database to find new homeowners to target for their marketing campaigns and direct mail. With most of these databases, there is a choice to download in text files or in .csv format, which is compatible with Microsoft Excel and other database organization software.

Where to Find Mailing List Information for Specific Areas

Searching online for a local municipal site can be time consuming as many times the records downloads or searches are not displayed predominantly on the web page. There are sites, such as Netronline, that have logged in the locations of these searches and this kind of service can make things easier.

When searching without the aid of Netronline or other services, and if searching for specific type of records for mailing lists, the search should take into consideration which department of the government is responsible for keeping the records and that part of the website should be checked. For instance, when looking for newly sold residential properties, looking in the tax collector's office is usually a good start since this is the department that is responsible for recording new title deeds.
